What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session: Tips for Timeless Photos
The number one question I am asked when families book with me is 'What should I wear?'. I thought it was time I put some of my most helpful tips for styling and bringing together your outfits for your family photo session so you can fell well prepared.
As your photographer, I want your session to be stress-free and fun. That’s why I’ve put together my best tips for choosing family photo outfits that will help you feel confident and look your best in every frame.
1. Start with a Colour Palette
Coordinating colours (rather than matching) always looks more natural in photos. Choose 2-3 main colours, then add neutrals to balance everything out. Here are a few tried-and-true palette ideas:
- Earthy Tones: Olive green, tan, cream, and rust
- Soft Neutrals: Blush pink, denim/soft grey, Beige, white
- Cool Tones: Navy, light blue, gray, and soft whites
- Autumn Colors: Mustard, burgundy, forest green, and camel
Start with one outfit you love—usually Mum’s—and build the rest of the family’s outfits around it.

2. Dress for the Season
Choose fabrics and colours that match the season:
- Spring: Light, airy fabrics in soft pastels or floral prints
- Summer: Breezy dresses, short sleeves, and sandals in warm neutral colours
- Autumn: Layers like cardigans, boots, and rich tones
- Winter: Cozy knits, scarves, and muted jewel tones
Layering also adds texture and depth to your photos, especially in cooler months!
3. Keep Patterns Simple
A little pattern goes a long way. If one family member is wearing gingham or floral, keep the rest in solids or subtle textures to avoid visual clutter. Avoid logos, loud graphics, or anything overly trendy that might feel dated later.
4. Think About Movement
Flowy long dresses or skirts, linen shirts, and clothes that move with you add a soft, romantic feel to your photos. Comfort matters too—when you feel good, it shows!
5. Shoes Matter (and So Do Accessories)
Don’t forget shoes! Clean, neutral footwear complements your look. If you’re shooting at the beach or a grassy field, barefoot is also a great option.
Keep accessories simple—hats, scarves, or layered jewelry can add personality without distracting from your faces.
6. Coordinate—Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit. The most beautiful family photos show connection and individuality. Aim for coordinated outfits that feel cohesive, not uniform.
7. Plan Ahead (and Try It On!)
Lay out everyone’s outfits a few days before your session to see how the colors work together. Have everyone try their outfit on to check the fit, comfort, and how they feel in it.
A relaxed family = genuine smiles and sweet moments.
